Azelaic acid is known to kill certain bacteria. It acts specifically on Cutibacterium acnes (acne bacteria) on the one hand and on Staphylococcus epidermidis (pustules in rosacea) on the other. Most other commensal microorganisms are not affected by azelaine. Inflammatory lesions often lead to postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Azelaic acid inhibits the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) - one of the causes of PIH and intrinsic trigger for redness - and significantly reduces the number of free radicals. Thus, the highlight active ingredient reduces inflammation and redness. It has a preventive effect against PIH and premature skin aging due to inflammatory aging. In addition, azelaic acid regulates natural sebum production and normalizes keratinization. Skin shine is reduced, pores appear refined and the skin surface becomes more even. The development of new inflammatory impurities is prevented.
